Art Center in Abandoned Soviet Period Building

This pro­ject was launched in the begin­ning of 2010 and was run­ning for one year. Art Pit team got a pos­sib­il­ity to use mod­ern archi­tec­ture build­ing from Soviet Union period in Lithuania, which was situ­ated in the city cen­ter of Kaunas Lithuania. This is a huge build­ing with a stage and place for an audi­ence of 600 people. It also has two floors and a spa­cious hall, which was used for exhib­i­tions, per­form­ances and movie screen­ings. As the build­ing was empty and very spa­cious, we sep­ar­ated it into four zones — read­ing corner, social space, cinema space under the stairs and exhib­i­tion space. For cre­at­ing a social space, we asked local people to donate old fur­niture, which was lat­ter refur­bished by the team of artists. Ironically, we got a lot of dona­tion of fur­niture from Soviet Union period, so it fit­ted very well with archi­tec­ture of the build­ing. This space became very attract­ive space for local young artists and cre­ates who got a pos­sib­il­ity to exhibit their works, organ­ize per­form­ances and gather together for vari­ous dis­cus­sions or just a cup of cof­fee. In one year, we organ­ized around 80 vari­ous kind of cre­at­ive events, which got a lot of atten­tion from local youth, tour­ists, press and cre­at­ive community.
